We need to distinguish between "faith" and "the faith".

"Faith" means trusting Jesus. This page is about faith.

"The faith" is the body of Christian beliefs taught in the Bible. It is another word for Christianity. This whole site is about those things.

Definitions of Faith

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.

(Hebrews 11:1)

Faith is a living, bold trust in God’s grace, so certain of God’s favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it.

(Martin Luther, An Introduction to St Paul’s Letter To The Romans)

Faith is confidence that God keeps His promises and nothing can thwart the plans of God.

(Andy Stanley, see the videos section)

Faith is believing what God says and acting accordingly.

(Peter Cheyne)

(Or, more briefly: Believing enough to act.)

Taking God at His word.

Faith is believing that He is what He is said to be, and that He will do what He has promised to do, and then to expect that of Him.

(Charles Spurgeon, All Of Grace)

Spurgeon also says that faith consists of knowledge, belief and trust.

(e.g. Faith. What Is It? How Can It Be Obtained?)

Faith is believing that God is who He says He is, and will do what he has promised to do.
