A SOAR analysis is an alternative to SWOT. SWOT can be seen as focusing on the negatives (weaknesses and threats) and more appropriate in a competitive, commercial context. SOAR builds on existing strengths and is sometimes preferred in volunteer and non-profit organisations. SOAR is asset-based rather than deficit-based.
A weakness is that users can overlook difficulties, or have a rose-tinted view. To help overcome that, some organisations add an extra R for Realities. Others add a single question at the end of the exercise, e.g. "What's the hardest truth about where we are right now that we need to name before moving on?"
